Kiran Bedi - Woman of substance

I guess everybody is familiar with this name. Kiran Bedi is India's first and highest ranking woman officer who joined IPS (Indian Police Services) and retired in 2007. She has served the IPS for over 35 years which predominantly has been a male dominated field if not now atleast till the last decade. And she hasnt been just another ordinary IPS officer but an extraordinary officer who has also represented India at UN, international forums, crime forums, women issues and what not. i just came to know yesterday that she retired in 2007. She is although still a very active social activist. I was just browsing about her biography, quite impressive. Born in Amritsar, Punjab, she was a simple girl who dared to take a tough job as IPS after doing her LLB from Delhi University. She married in a very unique way by going around the temple 7 times instead of the costly wedding customs. During her service, she was also the Inspector General Prisons of , Tihar Jail, Delhi- one of world's largest prison complexes. She did lot of reforms like spirituality, yoga, meditation for the prisoners which earned her magsaysay award.. Person worth reading about!

Kiran Bedi, undoubtedly symbloises a rebel. But deep within the rebel looks confused. The "rebel", as far as my thinking goes, is an effort of an individual to fight for the individuality of oneself. And this fight for individuality or in other words the fight for the absolute freedom for an individual should be done with no compromise. Why I am writing all this is because the rebel while marrying did exactly seven "PHERAs" around the temple. Why this hypocrisy?
And, let me tell you, Doing for 'showing-off' gets noticed easily by the genuine souls, beside the effetcs are never lasting. The prison reforms that you are mentioning are far from making any permanent impact.
But criticism notwithstanding, she is a woman who got noticed and definitely inspired many albeit ....

There was lot of hue and cry in the retiring time of Madam Bedi. Somehow the highest post of Delhi Police was not given to her and instead it went to another Police-officer (a man). Madam Bedi wend on long leave (for about a month) in protest. She also spoke a lot in open media.
This somehow did not match with her otherwise established image. And finally she took retirement.
A lady of that stature (now arguable) should not look up to few rule-bound (influence-infected) higher-ups for recognition and promotion. This kind of show by Madam Bedi has certainly devalued her. Magsaysay award winner shouting for a top-cop post. Despite all this 'justification Hungama' the post was not given to her.
By the way how did you know the seven PHERAs ? Who is publicising that (and for what) if it was so an unnoticed event?
If this kind simple acts are given so much importance they dont contribute anything to the societal cause because people start thinking "Oh thats possible, only for people like Kiran Bedi, only she can do that".

There are very few who do things and live life for no recognition. They just live and contribute silently. They do things for they enjoy it. And they are perhaps aware of their worth (even if they are not aware they are not bothered) no matter whether it gets noticed by some/all or not. For example a petty grass plant which all of sudden takes birth at the edge of a gutter on roadside least bothers for its life span. It takes birth at an unnoticed palce. It knows it was worth it and it got the life. We are also aware of the worth of the plants and grass for our life and life in general on earth. It contributes silently. The grass dances for some period in the open with all that it is bestowed of, bears the sun, breeze and the boots of people like us (sometime) and then it goes away. There is no question of worth. If it exists it is worth it.
We in Hindu mythology also worship grass, the cowdung and what not. There is no question of worth absolutely.
And there is no fight with you too.
